Jefferson Thomas Herrington
May 9, 1852 - September 12, 1934
Jefferson Thomas Herrington was born May 09, 1852 in Jones
Co., Mississippi in the Indian Springs area. He was the son of Darling J.
Herrington and Martha Ann Walters. He married Seleta Margaret Bynum on
December 27, 1876, daughter of Benjamin Bynum and Margaret Collins.
He began teaching in 1875 after attending the Rawls
Springs Seminary at Seminary, MS. He taught for five years. On the 1880 Census
his occupation is listed as teacher.
The 1880 Census of Jones County shows that here is a Rivers
Family living in the home of J. T. and Margaret. No direct relationship is
listed. Also, Richard Holifield is living in their house. He is listed as a
cousin. A perusal of the census shows that there were a great many Holifields
in Jones County at this time. Our records do show that his wife, Seleta Bynum
was first cousins to two women who married Holifields (Cynthia and Sarah Bynum,
daughters of Mark Bynum).
Prior to 1883 he owned land north of Ellisville where he farmed. In 1883 he
purchased land in town and built a home on Deason Street. In the year 1884 he
was in the mercantile business: Herrington, Dubose and Hill. He continued in
this business for a number of years, later became a bookkeeper and then from
1913-1924 he served two terms as Circuit Clerk of Jones County.
Both he and his wife were members of the Baptist Church.
He died September 12, 1934 in Ellisville, Jones Co.,
Mississippi. He is buried in the Ellisville Cemetery next to his wife and two
unmarried daughters, Maude and Bessie.

- Jefferson Thomas Herrington, Jr., b. September 12, 1886; d.
November 10, 1889.
- Bessie Margaret Herrington, b. September 17, 1888; d. 1955.
- Sidney Bowen Herrington, b. August 11, 1891; d. 1912.
