George Washington Shepard was born on December 14, 1828 in Denmark (Lewis Co.), New York. He married Eliza Jane Woodard on January 2,1847. They had nine children. In the Civil War, he served as Private - Co.A - 20 Cav. - New York - August 18, 1864 to June 16, 1865. He was wounded and was in the York Pennsylvania hospital from May 20, 1865 to June 24, 1865. (source: The Cartridge Box, Vol. 2:12, 17). His first wife died on September 19, 1890. He remarried to a Julia Elizabeth Carpenter on March 26, 1891. He died in Leon (Monroe Co.), Wisconsin on December 22, 1894 and is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Sparta, Wisconsin. |
