Elizabeth
("Betsy") Montgomery
Not much is known for certain about ELIZABETH ("BETSY") MONTGOMERY, daughter of Robert Montgomery and Rebecca Coffee. Like her siblings, she was born in South Carolina (see Robert Montgomery for a discussion about where in South Carolina the family might have been from). She is said to have died in Tennessee. She married Wiley Fields (born 1813) from Tennessee and had two children with him:
Stephen Fields (born in
1830), and Apparently Betsy died at some point between 1832 and 1840 because Wiley Fields is found living in Overton County, Tennessee in 1850 (see federal census) married to Jane (age 30). Both Stephen and Erasmus are living at home with the parents and the ages correspond to the birth years given above. There are several other children living in the home as well. There is a 13 year old Thomas Boon, 9 year old Jessee Fields, 4 year old Mahew (Matthew?) Fields, and 6 month old Eliza Fields. It is highly improbably that Jane Fields would have given birth to Stephen and Erasmus because of her age. Furthermore, the presence of Thomas Boon suggests that Jane had been married before. Thus, it is likely that around 1840 Wiley married Jane. If this scenario is correct, we can guess at a death date for Betsy between Erasmus birth in 1832 and the likely year of Wiley's marriage to Jane in 1840... the latest likely year of that marriage, at any rate. |
