JOHN MONTGOMERY was the son of
Robert
Montgomery and Rebecca Coffee.
He was born in South Carolina. Apart from this nothing is known
for certain about him.
The following is possible information on our John Montgomery, yet to be
proven:
John's parents and most of his siblings migrated to Mississippi by the
late 1820s. Family notes handed down from Goode Montgomery, Sr.
indicate that he settled in
Cotton Gin Port, Monroe County,
Mississippi. These notes also suggest that he married a woman named
"Aggie." We have found information in Monroe Co. MS about
John C. Montgomery married to Margaret Craig. I believe (but cannot
yet prove) that Goode Montgomery's notes are either mistaken or have been
wrongly interpreted during the transmission. "Aggie" is actually
"Maggie," a common nickname for Margaret.
We have found a John C. Montgomery on the 1850 census of Monroe County
(Dwelling # 74, Family #79). We currently have no way to
establish whether this is our John or not. Could the "C."
stand for "Coffee," his mother's maiden name? If so, then he
was born in 1798 and worked as a carpenter. He was married to Nancy,
not Margaret, Maggie or Aggie.
John C. Montgomery and Margaret Craig Montgomery had at least one child:
Mary Elizabeth Montgomery (b. October 29, 1843) who married Wade Hampton
Gordon on December 13, 1859.
A John C. Montgomery married (as Justice of the Peace) Eliza Caroline
Dilworth and John Anderson Thompson in Monroe Co. MS on March 4, 1844.
