MARGARET
DIXON MONTGOMERY (daughter of
Robert
Montgomery and Rebecca Coffee) was
born June 01, 1804 in South Carolina, and died August 13, 1866 in Pontotoc Co.,
Mississippi. She married
William Spencer on March 4, 1823. He was born 1797 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, SC.
She and her husband William were early members of the famous Monroe Mission
Church. Records
of the church minutes show that they were examined by and admitted on June
30, 1832. William is baptized on the following day, July 1. Their
children were subsequently baptized the following week on July 8.
William is listed as a witness for the transfer of land
from the Chickasaw people to the mission for the purpose of building the school
and missionary home. Also listed as witnesses are James Perry
(interpreter), James Hodges, William Spencer, Henry Love and King Ish-to-ho-to-pa
(taken from page 43 of From These Hills: A History of Pontotoc County,
ed. Callie B. Young, 1976).
