James Gideon
1811-1858

James Gideon, son of Richard Gideon was born June 1, 1811 in Tennessee.  He married Rebecca Jane Montgomery on December 24, 1835.  He died October 02, 1858 in Calhoun Co., Mississippi.  He is buried in 1858 in the Sarepta Cemetery, Calhoun County, MS.  When you enter the cemetery, the grave is to the left and is the same row as Word Gideon and Word's infant son.  There are several unmarked graves between the two.

A James Gideon (relation currently unknown) is listed on the Literary Tax Role of Monroe County, Mississippi in 1821 (transcribed in Mississippi Genealogical Exchange, vol. 25 (1979), p. 61).

From Pontotoc Pioneers Vol. 4 (in Magnolia Pontotoc Library, Pontotoc, MS, Genealogy Room).

"James Gideon this day made application to me, James J. Wilson, Clerk of the Probate Court of Pontotoc County, Mississippi, to have his Stock Mark and Brand recorded according to law, which is as follows, to wit: 'a Crop off the right ear and an under bit in the left ear and Brand thus JG' August 20, 1838 J. J. Wilson Clk."

 From Pontotoc Pioneers, Vol. 4, p. 132.
"James and Rebecca Gideon were reported living in Pontotoc Co. when the state census for Miss. was taken in 1837. He owned 320 acres of land which he sold in 1841 to Wm. Duke and moved to Lafayette Co."

Land tax roll for Calhoun County Mississippi show that she owned 160 acres about half a mile west of Sarepta.  It would have originally been in Lafayette Co., but that part of Lafayette, along with portions of Yalobusha & Chickasaw Counties ceded land in 1852 to form Calhoun County.  The town of Sarepta was located in the northeast corner of Calhoun County not far from the Pontotoc County line.

The family was living in LaFayette Co., Mississippi on 1850 Census.  Robert Montgomery and Rebecca Coffee Montgomery, Jane’s elderly parents were living with the Gideons at the time of the census.  Robert died that same year, exact date unknown.
